Accompanying Research
Overview
The Scientific Accompanying Study of the Certificate Courses
The certificate courses offered by Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg provide a scientifically grounded, job-accompanying qualification for second career teachers. They are specifically designed to advance the qualifications and professional development of lateral entrants.
This continuing education is complemented by a scientific accompanying study, which began in 2020 with the first cohort. The aim of the research is to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness and quality of the certificate courses as well as relevant influencing factors using a quantitative-statistical approach.
Research Objectives
The accompanying research of the certificate courses for lateral entry teachers pursues four overarching objectives:
- Effectiveness of the certificate courses with regard to selected aspects of professional competence and occupational well-being, such as self-efficacy and perceived stress
- Influencing factors that may affect the effectiveness of the continuing education, such as participants personal prerequisites and school context factors
- Quality of the continuing education offers within the framework of the certificate courses
- Implications and recommendations for schools and universities based on the research finding
Study Design
The accompanying research is conceived as evaluation research and examines how the certificate courses contribute to the development of competencies among second career teachers and which factors influence their effectiveness. A one-group pre-post design with multiple points of data collection is used for this purpose. Data is collected for each cohort both at the beginning (t1) and, depending on the regular duration of the program, at several points toward the end of the certificate courses (t2.1 to t2.4). This longitudinal study design allows for the examination of individual developmental trajectories and potential correlations. The surveys mainly consist of closed-ended questions and take approximately 30 minutes to complete. An overview of the study design and the variables examined at the different points of data collection is provided in the following graphic.
